Once again I'm embarking on training to cycle 210k in the annual Around the Bay in a Day.
Why do I do it?
Well apart from a joy of cycling and the camaraderie that I've developed with my fellow team members,I do it to raise money for the Smith Family - Learning for Life program. Why do i believe in this cause? Because I don't believe in sentencing children to a life of disadvantage without the possibility of parole.
Trying to imagine
Put simply, try to imagine what your life may have been like if you hadn't had the accidental good fortune to have been born into a family that was able to provide the education opportunities that have come your way
Really think about that for a moment, what might your life have been like without the educational opportunities you've received?
The Smith Family "Learning for Life" program seeks to assist disadvantaged Australian children remain in the education system by providing access to the same opportunities and resources (texts, excursions etc) as their peers. The Smith Family also provides scholarships that allow individual students to fulfil their potential. The initiatives are aimed at assisting families break out of the "poverty trap" via educational opportunities.
Who knows, one of these kids may grow up to contribute or fund a breakthrough in a crucial field like medicine, so I see it as an investment in our future
There are currently over 680,000 Aussie kids living in disadvantage. Your donation will help prevent many of these kids from slipping through the cracks by giving them access to education and learning programs, your support will enable them to develop the essential life skills they need to break the cycle of disadvantage. The Smith Family currently supports over 27,000 students in 95 communities around Australia, and only with your support can this number increase.
